07 Amsterdam district
Escort De Pijp: the lively south of Amsterdam
De Pijp was laid out in the late nineteenth century as a working-class extension beyond the old city limits, with long, narrow streets that locals say gave the neighbourhood its name. Painters lent their names to those streets, Ferdinand Bol, Gerard Dou, Jan Steen, and the district has turned out every bit as colourful as they would have wanted. It is young, international and loud in the best possible way.
Seven of our companions live here, a few minutes from the market stalls.

Landmarks worth knowing
The Albert Cuypmarkt runs every day except Sunday and is the backbone of the district. Sarphatipark offers a green square of calm right in the middle of it all, and on summer evenings the terraces around it stay full until late, as if the whole neighbourhood were one open-air living room. The old brewery on Stadhouderskade, now the Heineken Experience, marks the northern edge, with the Rijksmuseum just across the water. Since the north-south metro line opened, De Pijp station has put Centraal Station a few minutes away, and the Amstel river is a short walk east.

Hotels and stays
De Pijp has a growing number of design-conscious hotels along its edges, especially near Stadhouderskade and the Amstel, plus plenty of apartments and short-stay rentals inside the grid. A little further south lies the RAI convention centre, so trade fair visitors often base themselves here. Many rentals sit above shops, behind narrow doors squeezed between the windows, so a floor number and the name on the bell help a great deal. Hotel or apartment, the plan is the same: send the address and the name your stay is booked under, and your companion takes care of the rest.

How fast she can be there
With seven companions living in the district, an hour's notice is the normal expectation, sometimes less. Traffic on Ceintuurbaan and around the market can slow taxis in the early evening, and weekend nights on the terraces of Gerard Douplein are busy. If you are near Sarphatipark or the Amstel, arrivals tend to be smooth. Whatever the hour, we confirm a realistic time before she leaves.
05 De Pijp
A De Pijp kind of evening
Evenings here start early and run on appetite. The streets are lined with small restaurants from every corner of the world, wine bars with two tables on the pavement and cocktail spots that fill up after ten. Molly is made for this side of town, warm and playful with a love of house music and craft cocktails. Luna, bold and independent, will happily talk wine and theatre over a glass. Rosa is the easygoing choice, a gallery lover and record collector who makes a night in feel just as good as a night out. And if you want stories from the ski slopes and summers in Italy, ask about Laura.
