Escort Jordaan: Amsterdam's most local neighbourhood

Ask an Amsterdammer where the city keeps its soul and there is a good chance they will point west of the Prinsengracht. The Jordaan grew up in the seventeenth century as a quarter for workers and craftsmen, and its streets still carry the names of flowers and trees: Rozengracht, Bloemgracht, Lindengracht, Palmgracht. Most of the craftsmen are gone. The pride has stayed, and plenty of residents still talk about the Jordaan as a village inside the city.

Seven of our companions call the Jordaan home, so here you are booking a neighbour, not a visitor.

02 Jordaan

Towers, markets and hidden courtyards

The Westertoren rises over the eastern edge, the tallest church tower in Amsterdam, with the Anne Frank House a short walk along the canal. On Saturdays the Noordermarkt and the Lindengracht fill with market stalls. Tucked behind plain front doors are the hofjes, small almshouse courtyards built around gardens, where residents ask for quiet and visitors do well to give it. On Johnny Jordaanplein, bronze statues honour the singers who carried the neighbourhood's sentimental café songs across the whole country.

03 Jordaan

Where visitors stay

The Jordaan is not a district of big hotels. Guests here tend to be in boutique canal houses, serviced apartments above shops, or rentals with those steep Amsterdam staircases that surprise everyone the first time. Toward Haarlemmerdijk and the Westerpark the buildings grow larger and more modern. Whatever you have booked, the small scale suits discretion: fewer lobbies, fewer eyes, and a companion who walks in like she lives around the corner, because she does.

Arrival in the Jordaan

An hour's notice usually covers it, and a Jordaan companion heading to a Jordaan address can often be quicker. The one thing that slows arrivals down is finding the door. Addresses on these canals often come with suffixes for the ground floor and the floors above, and some entrances sit half a level below the street. Tell us the full house number, the canal or street, and which door is yours. Taxis cannot stop on every narrow bridge either, which is one more reason the last few metres are often walked.

05 Jordaan

An evening, Jordaan style

This is the neighbourhood for a slower night: a glass of red under the smoke-darkened ceiling of a brown café, a walk over the little bridges of the Egelantiersgracht, then back to your room. Karolina is the one to ask about the gables; architecture walks are her passion, and she has the wit to make them entertaining. Patricia loves bookshops and film noir, a lovely match for a quiet canal-house evening. Sonya, calm and thoughtful at 32, is ideal after a long day when easy company is all you want.
